Hoping you’re all getting some good end of season sailing in before we reach the April wind lull, and the dreaded daylight savings. I’m assuming people will be dispersing over this long weekend but maybe we should aim for a day out social sailing in Wanaka next weekend (28/29 March) if the winds are good, as this one got postponed earlier in the season. JARDINES ACCESS/ MOORING APPLICATION UPDATE.
Last newsletter we told you about the application for a boat mooring to be positioned in Woolshed Bay (Jardines) very close to the area where we launch and come in, and where the beginner kiteboarders practice their body dragging skills in the early stages.
We informed you that we had met with the applicant to try to see if we could find a suitable alternative but unfortunately he rejected our ideas of a position further upwind (ie upwind of the fence near where the kiters launch). He proposed another site further to the western side of the “Boating Facility Area” boundary. (see attached copy of the revised proposed location). The club asked for further details, proposals and a buoy to be put in so we could see how this spot would impact when actually sailing. We also contacted Harbour Master Marty Black to discuss the safety implications for us, as when he made initial comments on the application, he was unaware that the club had not originally been consulted or included as an affected party.
The Club lodged an official ‘register of interest as an affected party’ and Lakes Environmental have now agreed that we are an affected party with safety issues and that the effects on us will be ‘less than minor’. They are therefore informing the applicant and its up to him whether to try to negotiate on the position with the club, or whether to go to an official “Hearing”, where both sides would present their case and an independent Commissioner would decide.
In the meantime we are hoping that the applicant will still put in the buoy for their new proposal so that we can at least try it out on the water. So next time there’s a Southerly, watch out for your emails, we may be asking you to test out sailing with the buoy in position and then give us your comments. We will be calling a club meeting at some stage to make a decision about our official position and how we wish to proceed. Any further queries in the meantime contact Sue.
BEGINNER/IMPROVER WINDSURFING AT FRANKTON.
Coming to a close soon. Last sessions this Thursday 18th and then the final session will be Wed 24th March. 4.30-8. Frankton Beach.
WAKATIPU TRAILS TRUST EVENT NEXT THURS.
Thursday 25th March. Jacks Point to Jardines Park Bike(15kms), Run or Walk (7.5kms), along the new track and through private land not normally accessible. Early evening event. 4.30-5.30 register, 5.45 start at the Jacks Point Clubhouse. $15. Prizes for the most outrageous costume… sounds like lots of fun for a good cause if there’s no wind that day !
